Prior to 1871, there was but one parish and cemetery to serve the Roman Caholic residents of Yonkers. In May of 1871 the parish of St. Joseph was set off from St. Mary's. As the Catholic population grew, so did the need for additional burial space. To meet this need, the first pastor of Saint Joseph's, Rt. Rev. Monsignor Albert A. Lings, V.F.P.R. (1844-1915), purchased a 20 Acre plot on the Hastings border on July 5, 1877.
Several impressive memorials mark the graves of some of the longtime pastors of Yonkers' Catholic churches, including Monsgnor Joseph P. Caramanno (1905-1990), The Reverend John F. Kelahan (1865-1928), Rt. Rev. Monsignor Albert A. Lings, who had charge of Saint Joseph's from its founding in 1871 to his death in 1915, and many of the past pastors of Church of Saint Joseph.
St. Joseph's Cemetery has graves available for traditional burials, in ground burial of cremated remains and the first columbarium in Yonkers, for above ground inurnment of cremated remains.
